Information
This self-initiated industrial design project centres on a fictional reel-to-reel audio recorder branded ‘Forma’. Built from scratch, the hardware model serves as a foundation for exploring detailed hard-surface modelling, product design workflows, and intricate material treatments.
Real-World Inspiration
The machine draws inspiration from a diverse range of classic real-world tape decks, blending vintage mechanical layouts with contemporary design principles.
The ‘Forma’ visual identity and logo are original creations, integrated across the chassis to evaluate how graphic branding interacts with physical interfaces. This setup provided the environment to study the tactile relationships between structural design elements, analogue meters, toggle switches, and precise material treatments.
Production Process
Once the core asset was finalised, the recorder functioned as a digital prop for extensive compositional experiments. Approached in the manner of a studio photography project, the fluid, free-flowing workflow focused on taking a single subject and discovering diverse ways to frame it through bold geometric arrangements and macro close-ups.
The scenes were materialised and rendered using Octane to capture precise light behavior, while final tonal grading and post-production textures were completed in Photoshop to balance clean digital surfaces with realistic lens imperfections.
