Information
A visual design project combining 3D automotive visualisation with the graphic language of Grafika66.
The project features a Mercedes S63 rendered within a series of designed environments, combining cinematic lighting, unusual camera angles, refractive glass and lens effects, and experimental compositions with original Grafika66 artwork incorporated throughout.
Bringing together 3D rendering, graphic design, and collage illustration. Each composition begins with a digitally rendered 3D scene, photographed from deliberately unconventional perspectives and integrated into environments designed specifically for the project.
Grafika66
Elements of Grafika66 artwork appear throughout the final images in different forms: as large-scale graphic layers in the 3D environment, printed artwork, digital displays, and graphic elements composited post-render. Many of the images contrast the precision and restraint of clean graphic design and negative space with distressed textures, hand-drawn marks, typography and grungy collage.
Refractive glass and other optical elements are also used in front of the virtual camera to introduce distortion, reflections and unexpected visual anomalies. The result is a collection of 16 images that sits somewhere between automotive photography, 3D art, graphic design and experimental visual development.
Design Direction
A key part of the process was avoiding the polished, predictable language of a traditional car advertisement. Camera angles, reflections, cropped compositions and layered graphics were used to make the car feel more like an element of an art-directed composition than the sole subject of a commercial image.
The Grafika66 visual language became part of the environments themselves, allowing the graphic work and 3D imagery to continually overlap and interact.
Custom Graphic Processors
An important part of S63 x Grafika66 was the creation of custom graphic assets using experimental image processing techniques.
Original Grafika66 artwork was passed through a range of graphic filters and custom-built processors to produce deliberately lo-fi interpretations, drawing on the visual language of retro computing, early video games and digital image degradation.
Techniques included Atari 2600-style image conversions, Commodore 64-inspired graphics, ASCII art and other forms of pixel-based and procedural image processing.
These treatments transformed existing artwork into new graphic elements, introducing unexpected patterns, textures, tonal breaks and digital artefacts.
Custom Assets
Custom and bespoke assets were incorporated into the final compositions in multiple ways: layered over 3D renders, integrated into environmental graphics, used as masks to drive additional effects and offsets, and applied to create distortions and other compositing treatments.
Rather than functioning simply as decorative overlays, the processed images became part of the integral visual construction of each piece.
A Study in 3D, Graphics & Image Making
S63 x Grafika66 brings together 3D automotive visualisation, graphic design, experimental image processing and digital collage in a personal exploration of visual style and composition. By combining Mercedes S63 renders with original Grafika66 artwork, custom-generated lo-fi graphics and unconventional compositing techniques, the project moves beyond traditional automotive imagery into something more expressive and graphic-led.
